Performing Arts Centre
Old Town, Edinburgh, UK
The catalyst for the project was the Cowgate fire, which opened up a ruined site along South Bridge in Edinburgh’s historic Old Town. The project examines how a Jazz & Blues School could be integrated into the sites historic structure by excavating, connecting and re-inhabiting the archaeological ruins revealed by the fire.
The school attempts to demonstrate to its users and visitors the full process of how music and performances are produced. This will be achieved by creating a series of spaces which inspire and facilitate the musical process, creating situations where a range of levels of musical talent will be showcased. This arena is intended to educate both the performer and their audience. The contrast between the established visiting musicians and emerging talent adds to the dynamic mix of the school.
The site is currently being developed to produce a mixed use development called SoCo and will feature a hotel, restaurant, festival venue, business centre and nightclub.
